Metra to pay $11M to families of passengers killed in 2005 derailment

On September 17, 2005, a double-decker five-car Rock Island Metra train derailed, killing 38-year-old Allison Walsh and 22-year-old Jane Cuthbert.

Federal investigators determined that the train's conductor passed through a track switching area near 47th Street at an unsafe speed.

Several cars derailed and one slammed into a steel bridge.

More than 100 other passengers were hurt in that derailment.
