The smart transit card could be purchased like a gift card in specific dollar amounts or loaded with cash when necessary. The cards, which contain computer chips, could also be programmed to show if a rider qualifies for a reduced fare.
New York is already experimenting with a pilot program on buses and subways. Chicago is still only in the talking stage.
