Food pantries in Chicago and nationwide are throwing away thousands of pounds of food that may contain peanut products tainted by a salmonella outbreak. Workers at The Greater Chicago Food Depository have tossed about 500 pounds of food.

Items like granola bars, cereals, cookies, nut mixes and peanut butter have long been a mainstay of food pantries because of their durability and long shelf life.
