A move to end Roland Burris' appointment as U.S. senator and hold a special election has failed in the Illinois legislature.A state Senate subcommittee voted 3 to 2 along party lines on Wednesday to reject it.

Democrats argued an election to replace Burris would cost too much. But Republicans say the appointment is tarnished and the decision should be up to voters.

Right now Illinois law lets Burris serve until January 2011.
