City may cut 1,600 jobs

April 16, 2009 (CHICAGO) The Chicago Sun-Times reports that city officials delivered the news to union leaders during a meeting this week.

Four hundred and twenty workers were laid off at the beginning of the year.

Revenues are reportedly down and the city is said to be facing as much as a $300 million budget shortfall.

Unions could be asked to agree to such measures as pay cuts, furlough days and work rule changes. That would cut overtime.

Police and firefighters would not be affected.
