Airhart died three years ago from injuries he suffered in 2001 when he was shot in the head by a man police were trying to arrest on bank robbery charges.
Several other officers from the Chicago Police Department and many suburbs were honored on Wednesday as well.
The annual ceremony recognizes law enforcement officers who have distinguished themselves by exhibiting bravery at the risk of their own lives.
