An Illinoisian and an Oklahoman have been identified as two soldiers who were killed in a bomb attack in the Philippines that has been blamed on al-Qaida-linked militants. The Defense Department announced Thursday that 26-year-old Staff Sgt. Jack M. Martin III of Bethany and Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Shaw of Markham, Ill., died Tuesday on Jolo Island.

Officials said earlier this week the men were part of a military convoy carrying American troops that rolled over a bomb buried under the road.

U.S. Maj. Bradley Gordon said the soldiers were part of a task force deployed to help quell militants in the southern Philippines.

Martin and Shaw were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, in Fort Lewis, Wash.
