Being overweight, especially around the middle, may increase a woman's risk for developing asthma. A California study of 88,000 women has found that those who were overweight or obese were much more likely to have asthma than women of healthy weight.

The study also found that, regardless of a woman's weight, a waist size of more than 34 inches also contributed to an increased risk for asthma.

The study is in this month's edition of the journal Thorax.
