For Your Family: Treating Lice

February 1, 2010 It's a pesky problem, but you may not know just how common it is. According to school principals, head lice is the number-one public health problem in U.S. schools and the most contagious condition after chickenpox.

Roughly 6 million school-age children contract lice every year. And this time of year, right after kids are back from winter break, they tend to see a little spike in the number of cases.

- Start with a dry check, look for nits (eggs), which appear as yellowish-white dots that stick to the hair shaft
- Live lice are harder to spot, but they look like insects
- Home remedies like olive oil, vinegar and mayonnaise do not work
