Possible link between Internet use and depression

Does the Internet cause depression or are people who are drawn to it depressed? That's the question being raised after a study finds that people who spend an excessive amount of time on the internet are more likely to show signs of depression.

Psychologists found what they said was "striking" evidence that some avid internet users develop compulsive internet habits in which they replace real life social interaction with online chat rooms and social networking sites.

The authors in the journal Psychopathology say they believe this type of addictive surfing can have a serious impact on mental health.
