Car crashes into Wilmette home

February 18, 2010 (WILMETTE, Ill.) It was a rude awakening for a North Shore couple when a car crashed into their home.

It happened Thursday morning in the 2200-block of Beechwood in Wilmette. The car took out a fire hydrant before slamming into the front of the house.

Part of a brick wall was pushed in, sending debris flying inside the house and knocking over furniture and other household items.

The driver and passenger of the car were treated at Evanston Hospital. Carlos Almanza, 28, was charged with DUI and the passenger, 28-year old tony Brito, was charged with possession of marijuana.

Homeowners Lloyd and Peggy Nelson were asleep at the time.

"We heard this loud noise at 1 o'clock in the morning. The alarm went off," Lloyd Nelson said.

"A lot of that is replaceable, but there is some antique crystal and china and that will be impossible, family pieces," said Peggy Nelson.
