Emergency crews were on the scene at Schaumburg Regional Airport. The plane crashed just 10 feet from the runway.
Witnesses say the plane made it into the air but started to drift to the south almost immediately and then crashed nose first just off to the side of the runway.
Only the pilot appears to have been on the plane. Crews removed the body from the wreckage just before 4 p.m. Monday
The National Transportation Safety Board sent investigators to the scene to the determine the cause of the crash.
