Chicago police are investigating whether a suspect in custody is connected to more attacks after DNA evidence linked the South Side man to two assaults.

Marshall Smith, 44, of the 8400-block of S. Morgan, was charged with one count each of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual assault.

Police say they arrested Smith at his home Monday night.

Police say the sexual assaults of two teenage girls took place after Smith befriended them and gained their confidence before taking them to a remote location and sexually assaulting them.

The most recent attack occurred last spring in the 5900-block of S. Rockwell Ave. where a 13-year-old girl was attacked in a basement.

A second victim also identified Smith in a lineup as the offender who attacked her in July of 1996 while Smith brandished a handgun.

Police encouraged additional victims of similar attacks to call the Area 4 Detective Division at 312-746-8252.
