A student at Englewood Community Academy High School won a Black History Month essay contest- and $1,000 scholarship.

Chicago City Treasurer Stephanie Neely presented 17-year-old Destiney Morris with the scholarship Wednesday.

Morris' winning essay outlined what she would do if she were mayor of Chicago. Her plans included making streets safer for children to go to school.

Her essay will be sent to mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel.
