Firefighter hurt in West Side blaze

July 9, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The fire broke out at an abandoned, two-story building at approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the 4500-block of West Harrison Street.

The firefighter slipped and fell from a ladder. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in "code green," which means good conditions. His injuries were described as minor, and he was released from the hospital later Saturday morning.

Although the building was vacant, firefighters say the fire was tough to fight due to the flames and large amounts of smoke. Crews battled for about an hour to extinguish it. According to a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson, additional help had to be called in.

No one else was hurt.

There was no word on the cause of the fire.
