Police have not released many details but say they were called to the 200-block of West 14th Place early Saturday morning for a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they found Danielle Simmons had been shot.
Her father Milton Patterson said that Simmons moved to the area from Minnesota about a year ago. She had been staying with friends and trying to earn her GED. He said she would come by periodically and let him know she was OK.
"These streets, she don't know nothing about that. She was actually born in Chicago but raised in Minnesota. She don't know these people that she was hanging around with. She really didn't so that's what I was worried about," Patterson said.
Chicago Heights police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating. They're asking anyone with information to come forward.
