Karen Freeman-Wilson is starting the new year as the state of Indiana's first black female mayor.

She takes office Sunday in Gary.

The Harvard Law school graduate is a former Indiana state attorney general.

Freeman-Wilson hopes her vision and leadership ability can help solve her city's serious problems. Her many challenges include crime, a declining tax base, and a loss of population.
