Paddlers start new year in canoes

Sunday's wind, snow and cold did little to dissuade more than 300 hardy souls from a New Year's Day canoe trip.

It was the 27th annual Canoe Paddle hosted by the Forest Preserve of Cook County.

It was a free event but organizers invited experienced paddlers because cold-weather canoeing can be dangerous.

Paddlers made a four-mile trip downstream through the northern suburbs, ending their journey in Morton Grove's Linne Woods.
