U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk underwent a surgical procedure late Wednesday to create more space around his brain.

His neurosurgeon says that yesterday doctors removed two small pieces of brain tissue that were destroyed by the stroke.

Dr. Richard Fessler says this is a common procedure which creates more space around the brain to accommodate expected swelling.

Dr. Fessler says the senator is alert and gave a thumbs up when asked to during an examination today.
