Cook County Commissioners are set to debate a controversial immigration policy Thursday.

They will hold a public hearing on whether to keep suspected illegal immigrants behind bars while federal authorities check their immigration status.

Commissioners will consider two amendments. One gives Sheriff Tom Dart sole discretion over detainer enforcement.

The second calls on Dart to enforce the current rules on suspects accused of violent crimes, drug offenses or suspected terrorists.
