The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has requested that automakers alter high-tech dashboard gadgets so they do not distract drivers.

The NHTSA proposed new voluntary guidelines for automakers. They include a recommendation that automakers design devices so built-in devices for text messaging and GPS images are automatically disabled when the car's transmission is not in park.

Car manufacturers have 60 days to review and comment on the proposed guidelines.
