Firefighters rescued seven people from a burning apartment building on the 1900 block of West Granville. They include two children that were brought down by ladder from the third floor.

At least 10 ambulances were called to the scene.

Fire officials say a 79-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Another patient was taken to a hospital in good condition. Three other people were examined at the scene.

Firefighters put out the fire shortly after it broke out just after 2 p.m. It was contained to the first floor but caused smoke damage to the entire three-story building.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
