North Chicago Police Chief Michael Newsome has retired after a controversial case of accused brutality in the department.

Darrin Hanna died due to injuries allegedly inflicted during an arrest in November. That resulted in a stream of new and old accusations of excessive use of force by North Chicago police and lawsuits against the city.

Newsome was placed on administrative leave, and the Sun-Times says his retirement was effective last weekend.
