Flu outbreak plateauing, except in West

New government figures show the flu is still at epidemic levels. But the good news is it's starting to level off everywhere except in the west.

The CDC says hospitalizations and deaths spiked again last week, especially among the elderly. And they add this year's flu strain tends to make people sicker. That's why the CDC is saying quick antiviral medicines are important, especially for the very young or old.

So, keep washing your hands and taking precautions.

If you do get sick, most people recover completely in one to two weeks, but some can develop complications, such as pneumonia.

Finally, health officials continue to encourage people to get vaccinated.
