'Functional cure' for HIV subject of French study

A new study finds treating people with HIV immediately after they have become infected with the virus may be enough to achieve a ''functional cure'' in a small proportion of patients.

Scientists in France followed 14 patients who were treated swiftly with HIV drugs but then stopped treatment.

Seven years later, they showed no signs of the virus rebounding, even though the virus was still detectable.

This research follows news earlier this month about a baby girl being effectively cured of HIV after receiving rapid treatment.
