Chicago shootings: Tracking gun violence in 2024

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Gunman shoots at, damages CPD vehicle in Gage Park, Chicago police say

A Chicago police car was damaged by gunfire Sunday night on Chicago's Southwest Side, CPD said.

Chicago police officers in an unmarked car responded to a call of a gang disturbance/person with a gun in the 5200-block of South Homan Avenue in Gage Park just after 11 p.m., CPD said.

That's when they saw a male suspect standing with a group of individuals shoot a gun at them, hitting the car, police said.

Police did not return fire, and no injuries were reported, police said.

The suspect is not in custody, and several people of interest are being questioned by Area One detectives.

16-year-old boy seriously wounded in Rogers Park shooting: Chicago police

A 16-year-old boy was seriously wounded in a North Side shooting on Friday, Chicago police said.

It happened at around 8:09 p. in the 1600 blk. of W. Juneway Terrace in Rogers Park.

Police said the teen was standing in an alley with several other people when shots rang out.

He was hit in the abdomen and back.

No one is in custody.

Area Three detectives are investigating.

3 women shot, 1 fatally, in Garfield Park shooting: Chicago police

A shooting left a woman dead and two other women hurt Friday night on the city's West Side, Chicago police said.

This happened just after 9:40 p.m. near Fulton and Kedzie, in the Garfield Park neighborhood.

Video from the scene showed a large police response to the shooting, including at least one bullet through a car's windshield.

A witness said he heard shots.

"I just heard a shooting, I got down to the ground," said Regal. "I heard three girls got shot, one lost her life. That's all I know man, wicked wild west."

CPD said an unidentified woman was taken to Stroger Hospital where she died.

A 25-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder and taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition, police said.

A 23-year-old woman was transported to Mt. Sinai with a gunshot wound to the back, police said. She was listed in fair condition.

The three victims were found inside and outside the home, police said. So investigators are till trying to figure out where exactly the shots were fired.

No one is in custody.

Man shot to death inside vehicle in East Garfield Park: Chicago police

A man was shot to death inside a vehicle on Chicago's West Side on Friday evening, police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the East Garfield Park neighborhood's 400-block of North Springfield Avenue just before 10 p.m.

A 38-year-old man was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on Springfield Avenue when shots were fired, police said.

The victim, shot in his face and chest, was driven to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There is no one in custody and Area Four detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.
