Durbin says legislation to improve toy safety

CHICAGO He talked about the bill during a visit to "Timeless Toys" on North Lincoln in Chicago.

The store's owners said their customers were concerned after a rash of toy recalls last year.

Durbin says the new legislation will increase funding for to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, increase staffing levels and certify overseas labs to test products before they come to the U.S.

"It also bans lead," said Durbin. "We've done that over and over again. It appears that message didn't get through, only in the most infinitesimal amounts where it cannot be avoided, there's lead in the atmosphere, we're banning lead and making it clear there's no excuse."

Durbin says there will be increased fines for violators.
