Rule would regulate laser treatments

The proposed rule by state regulators would require a physician to examine a patient and then prescribe the type of laser treatment to be performed. That means the doctor must be on site during the procedure, even if it is actually being performed by a technician.

A spokesman with the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery says there has been a dramatic rise in the number of patients complaining of injuries due to laser procedures performed by non-physicians.
