The facility would enable regular airline service between northwest Indiana and Mexico, according to a unanimous resolution by the Lake County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The Mexican airline VivaAerobus applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation in March for daily flights between Gary and Monterey, Mexico. The airport first must build a customs facility, which would require approval from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and could cost at least $3 million.
The Hammond City Council approved a similar resolution last month.
