The weak economy has resulted in layoffs for a Chicago investment company.The weak economy has resulted in layoffs for a Chicago investment company. Executives at Ariel Investments laid off 18 of their 100 employees Thursday.

The layoffs are being blamed on poor returns in what company executives call, "a very difficult investment market."

This is the first cutback in staff at Ariel in the firm's 25-year history.
