Some Chicago church congregations are stepping up their calls to boycott the first day of school in September.

On the West Side, members of Mars Hill Baptist Church pushed the boycott, which is set for September 2. The churches gathered there were signing up families to participate.

Organizers say low graduation rates and test scores are a result of poor funding. The Chicago Urban League has sued the state Board of Education, claiming the school funding system violates the civil rights of minority children.
