Binge drinking could raise stroke risk

A study in the journal Stroke finds people who occasionally binge drink may face this risk even if they do not regularly drink heavily.

Researchers have known that while moderate drinking seems to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, regular, heavy alcohol consumption has the opposite effect. But the relationship between sporadic binge drinking and stroke risk has been unclear.

Binge drinking was defined as having six or more drinks at one sitting for men and four or more drinks for women.

The link is not clear, but large doses of alcohol are known to have short-term cardiovascular effects.
