Students at Chicago's Bass Elementary School packed up care packages on Friday for U.S. troops overseas. The personal care and food items will be shipped to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Children also wrote letters to service members.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White congratulated the students at Bass Elementary on Friday for their efforts.

"You have shown us you have a giving and caring sprit and i just want to applaud, come in and than you for a job well done," said White.

Supporters of this effort say the students were answering president obama's call to national service.
