Church donates money to pay cop for a year

February 15, 2009 (GARY, Ind.) Pastors Cedric and Joyce Oliver of the Embassies of Christ church say public safety is the highest priority for the city of Gary. However, the city is facing a $30-million shortfall in tax revenue.

Mayor Rudy Clay has said he could be forced to lay off hundreds of city employees, including police and firefighters.

Sunday's donation will cover the salary of Officer Shanesha Emmons for the next year.

"I want to thank the pastor and the entire Embassies of Christ church for observing and noticing there was a problem in the city and recognizing the officers and the hard work we do on an everyday basis. Thank you for that," Emmons said Sunday.

Church officials say they hope the donation demonstrates their commitment to the city.
