An Illinois House panel is recommending bills that would give residents the right to carry concealed weapons. The proposal is expected to draw fire from Chicago-area lawmakers, who have expressed concern about increased gun violence.
Last summer, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a handgun ban in Washington D.C.
Chicago is fighting the ruling.
The proposed bills would allow state police or county sheriffs to issue permits. The Illinois Sheriffs' Association supports the measures.
