A 16-year-old boy survived after he lost control of his car and crashed into an icy river in southwest suburban New Lenox. It happened early Sunday morning near Spencer and Illinois Highway. Jim Watt said his son swerved to avoid hitting an animal that crossed the road. The teen, who was traveling alone, lost control of the car and skidded off the icy road.

The Honda Civic crash landed in the Hickory Creek.

"Someone came by just as he was getting out of the creek, called me on the cell phone, and that's when I came out," Watt said. "He's incredibly lucky. The car landed right-side up. Had it landed upside down, this would have been a different situation."

The 16-year-old was not injured in the accident.

Watt said his son was wearing a seat at the time of the crash.

"The conditions on this road were incredibly icy," Watt added. "Salt trucks hadn't been out. The plows hadn't been out."
