Cardinal Francis George is calling Notre Dame's invitation to President Obama to speak at its commencement an "extreme embarrassment" to Catholics. The cardinal made the announcement Sunday at a conference in northwest suburban Rosemont.

Obama's positions on embryonic stem cell research and abortion have incited protests over the president's planned speech on May 17.

Cardinal George said, "It is clear that Notre Dame didn't understand what it means to be Catholic when they issued this invitation."

Notre Dame's president, the Rev.John Jenkins, said the university does not condone all of the president's policies.

The university has a tradition of inviting sitting presidents to speak at graduation.
