May 1, 2009 --With the current flu outbreak, health officials are urging people who are sick to stay home from work to avoid infecting others. But new research in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health shows staying home when sick can benefit the patient as well. In the study thousands of Danish employees were tracked. Those who were repeatedly ill on the job were 74 percent more likely to become seriously ill in the future, enough to miss two months of work
Researchers think that taking short sick leaves give workers a chance to rest and recuperate reducing the odds of chronic illnesses.
