Police have recovered the weapon.
Police say Shannon stole the gun from Officer Densey Cole Wednesday night as Cole was pinned inside his police SUV.Cole was responding to a burglary in progress when he was injured in a two-vehicle accident at 98th and Halsted.
While he was pinned in his SUV, onlookers rifled through his belongings and Shannon allegedly stole his gun.
It's a case that has angered Mayor Daley and Police Superintendent Jody Weis, who called the action "reprehensible."
The superintendent says Officer Cole has a severe spinal injury, had surgery yesterday and is now in a medically induced coma.
Police recovered the weapon.
