August 19, 2009 (GARY, Ind.) --Many children in Gary, Ind., started their first day of school Wednesday by being escorted by their fathers. The Gary Commission on the Social Status of Black Males partnered with the Black Star Project for the Million Father March in Gary.
Foster fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers and other father figures helped escort children as well.
Organizers are urging concerned men to stand up and accept responsibility to rebuild the community and provide a safe environment for children.
