Dozens of families waited overnight outside a South Side community center for a chance at housing vouchers that are not available. The wait list is not open, according to Matt Aguilar with the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA).

"This was a rumor that turned into people believing it is true," said Aguilar.

Aguilar said the Section 8 housing wait list has been closed since 2008.

The CHA sent personnel to the Charles Hayes Community Investment Center on South Wabash near 48th Street to deal with the confusion over the Section 8 housing vouchers.

"People said that they were giving out Section 8 papers," Deborah Watts. "Poor people need places to live."

"We are hoping that they open it up," said Kiera Keys.

The Chicago Housing Authority's Web site, thecha.org and a sign on the door at the Hayes Center says the waiting list for housing vouchers is closed, except for seniors. Security guards at the center also reportedly told the approximately 100 people in line there would be no vouchers handed out.
