Quinn calls for more scholarship funding

September 25, 2009 (CHICAGO) There have been cuts in the grants because of the state's budget crisis.

"It was a tough budget year and the General Assembly decided to only fund the first semester of college scholarships. That's not acceptable, we have two semesters here," Quinn said.

Map grants provide money to residents who attend approved Illinois colleges and demonstrate financial need.

About 145,000 low-income students get aid through the program.

Quinn wants lawmakers to find funding for the program when the veto session begins next month.
