Memorial service for gun violence victims

October 3, 2009 (CHICAGO) Phillip Jackson, the Black Star Project's executive director, led a bell-ringing memorial Saturday to victims of violence. The volunteers are to walk the streets and work with schools and churches.

The head of Chicago's alternative policing strategy says residents should help their communities.

"Volunteer to be an adult leader around your school, either high school or elementary school. There's no city-led organization--police, in the mayor's office, anywhere-- that will serve us better than we will serve ourselves," said Phillip Hampton, CAPS commissioner.

There were also calls for better education, stronger families, and more jobs.
