Web site requests change in fuel-economy ratings

November 16, 2009 Edmunds.com says a car's mileage should be based on the average monthly cost of operating the vehicle.

The Web site says that would give consumers a better comparison of cars especially hybrids.

Some new electric cars are advertised as getting 200 to 300 miles per gallon.

The environmental protection agency is looking at different formulas to more accurately tell consumers about a vehicle's fuel efficiency.

It's expected to rule on the issue by early next year.
