Red Line train derails in South Loop

January 14, 2010 (CHICAGO) The Red Line was back to normal by 6 a.m. after power was shut down as crews worked to clear the derailment. Two men suffered minor injuries as a result of the derailment around 1:20 a.m.

A northbound Red Line train hit a track switcher when the second car of the four-car train began to rock to and fro and derailed. Of the 16 passengers on board, many said they knew something was wrong when that car began to vigorously rock back and forth.

"I got off of work and thought I was coming home quick, but now it is slower than normal, hopefully not too bad," said passenger Porche McCoy.

It is still unclear what caused the derailment. Chicago Transit Authority officials removed the train and righted the car that was listing to one side toward an emergency walkway. The platform at Roosevelt is fine, the tracks have been repaired and the train was moved.
