Opposition to Meeks-proposed school council bill

February 12, 2010 (CHICAGO)

State Senator Reverend James Meeks said Thursday that many schools are struggling. So he wants to take control of the Chicago Public Schools away from Mayor Daley. His proposal would also prevent school councils from hiring principals and developing school budgets.

Friday, a group of council members and local clergy said they support Meeks' work to reform school funding and his calls for an elected school board. But they say "his assault on local school councils is bad policy from a good man."

"We applaud Senator Meeks sense of urgency. But LSCs need to be supported, not eliminated. Communities that have been underserved for decades cannot lose our only vehicle for holding our school systems accountable," said Jitu Brown, Kenwood Oakland Comm. Organization.

Brown said he and others would like to meet with Senator Meeks to discuss his plan.
