5 hurt in Gresham blaze

March 3, 2010 (CHICAGO) The fire first erupted in a basement apartment near 79th and South Ellis and quickly spread to the upper floors. Several residents had to be taken out of the burning three-story building using ladders.

"We reached three adults and two children, and minor smoke damage, and they were all taken to area hospitals," said Jeffrey Springer, Chicago Fire Dept. District Chief.

Five people were injured, including two children. Their injuries are not serious.

It took 100 firefighters about 45 minutes to contain the blaze. There was no word yet on a cause of the fire.
