Docs may be misleading patients about target cholesterol

March 11, 2010

A study in the European Heart Journal say only half of patients at high risk of heart disease are given the right targets for lowering cholesterol. And that could mean millions of people may suffer heart attack or stroke that otherwise could have been prevented.

Doctors are often advised that the higher the patients heart risk the lower the cholesterol should be.

But, levels of risk are sometimes hard to establish. Researchers say the guidelines for calculating the levels are too complex and efforts should be made to make them simpler and easier to understand.
