Colon cancer prevention tips

March 26, 2010 March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

There is a campaign underway to educate people about colon cancer because as deadly as it is, colon cancer is curable.

Myth #1, colon cancer only affects men. Fact: About an equal number of men and women are diagnosed with colon cancer.

Myth # 2, only people with a family history can get it. Fact: Almost 75 percent of colon cancer cases have no prior family history.

Myth #3, I don't have symptoms so I don't need to be screened. Fact: In early stages, colon cancer generally has no symptom and gives no warning.

Myth #4, coloscopies are unpleasant and uncomfortable. Fact: Procedure takes 15-30 minutes and you can resume normal activities the next day.
