Internet addresses running out

The Internet is about to reach a limit. It's estimated that IP addresses will be exhausted within 18 months. They are used by each PC and smartphones to gain access to the Internet.

The last group of addresses is expected to be issued in September of 2011.

The current Internet, designed in 1970, is built around 4 billion IP addresses.

A replacement system has trillions more addresses that are ready to go. But businesses have been slow to adapt to the new technology. Some experts fear that could cause problems when the old Internet addresses run out next year.
